If you look at the tree stump behind the original statue of David, it is only halfway up his leg. The majority of reproductions have a stump which goes up the length of his leg, these are considered later versions. Cast Alabaster statues are made from a material in which natural crushed Greek Alabaster stone is mixed with a small quantity of resin that works as a glue. Alabaster was very widely used for small sculptures in the ancient world, especially in Ancient Greece, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Impressive look.
