Mint: Amisos, Pontos Size: 20.2 mm Weight: 7.55 grams WAR WITH ROME! A very nice bronze coin issued by the great enemy of Rome, Mithradates VI. The design choices of Ares, the god of war, and the sword are no doubt an allusion to the wars which Mithradates started against the Roman Republic in opposition to the Republic's expansion into Asia. In 88 BCE, Mithradates orchestrated the widespread massacre of ~100,000 Roman citizens and Latin-speakers in Anatolian cities. The event would come to be known as the Asiatic Vespers, and ensured Mithradates' place on the top of the Roman Republic's hit list. In response, Rome sent a large invasion force under the command of Sulla. Rome's victory in the First Mithridatic War drove Mithradates back to Pontus but was inconclusive, leading to two further wars before Mithradates final defeat at the hands of Pompey in 63 BCE.
