Description: L. SPRAGUE DE CAMPTHE TRITONIAN RINGOwlswick / Miller (1977)Art by Jim Cawthorne & George Barr Condition: some shelfwear, especially top of jacket spine, otherwise very good or better. From Wikipedia:Its first publication as a stand-alone novel was as a paperback in 1968; the first hardcover edition was from Owlswick in 1977. This is a beautiful book, with the jacket art repeated (in full color without the printing) on the inside front cover + flyleaf, and also on the back cover + flyleaf. Interior art is black and white. Interesting oddity: the ISBN given in the book on the contents page is 1 + the actual number recorded on the internet... although the correct number is printed on the jacket (rear flyleaf). About the story:Prince Vakar battles the savage prehistoric gods in his dangerous quest for The Tritonian Ring.Night falls on the bronze-age world of Poseidonia, a continent threatened with destruction. In the smoke of the magician's fire appears the figure of the witch Gra. "What wish the lords of Lorsk with me?""Advise us how to avert the menace of the Gorgons," the magician answers."Send Prince Vakar to seek the thing the gods fear most!" Commentaries from GOODREADS: I consider this a minor classic of S&S and one of de Camp's more accomplished solo works (most of his well-known stuff was written in collaboration with Fletcher Pratt). Unlike his Conan pastiches, which while readable could hardly be considered much more than vaguely inspired hackwork, The Tritonian Ring is a far more original and personal work. Very fun! I've always been told how De Camp is famous for his "provocative" fantasy, and it got me curious... this was his first work I've ever read, and it didn't disappoint me a bit! I look forward to reading more of De Camp's fantasy. The Tritonian Ring is a book that takes storytelling seriously without taking itself seriously. For a quick, pulpy read, de Camp brings it to an enormously satisfying close. There is romance, happy endings, and just desserts, if not always in the way that we or the characters expect.______________ WOW!
