LARAINE DAY - AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT SIGNED IN TEXT CIRCA 1954 - HFSID 292263 LARAINE DAY As "the First Lady of Baseball", she penned these notes to husband and Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher, applying popular melodies to New York Giants players, probably the World Champion 1954 Giants. Autograph Manuscript signed in text: "Laraine Day", 8 pages, 5x4. No place, no date, but circa 1954. Addressed in text to then husband Leo Durocher on his personal note paper. This manuscript was in the estate of actress Laraine Day, who was married to Hall of Fame baseball manager Leo Durocher from 1947 to 1960. Durocher managed the New York Giants from 1948 to 1955, and - from the names of players mentioned in the manuscript, it must date from 1953 or 1954, probably 1954, when the Giants swept the favored Cleveland Indians in the World Series. Day seems to have been brainstorming about some sort of musical review, with popular songs re-written to fit Giants players. She includes a list of actor whom she apparently liked for parts in the performance. In full: [first page] "That Old Black Magic - That Willie Mays has got me in his spell, Cause Willie plays that center field so well, Back and back he goes, Those line drives he throws"; [second page] "Margie - Marvin, They call him Marvelous Marvin Grissom, He's such a dreamboat I could kiss 'em, No wonder Brooklyn Dodgers hiss him, The strikes he throws they miss em; [third page] "Do nothin till you hear from me - Laraine Day to Leo Durocher, Blue Skies - Willie makin those plays, Marvelous Willie - our Willie Mays" [fourth page] "Lazy River (Davy Williams) Whitey Lockman, Bobby Hofmann - Rueben, Rueben I've Been Thinkin, That's My Desire (Dusty Rhodes), Oh Johnny - Johnny Antonelli"; [fifth page] "Be My Life Companion and I'll Never Be Poor - Leo Durocher to Willie Mays, I May be Wrong but - Leo to Willie"; [sixth page] "I'm Just Wild About Harry - Henry Thomp.[son], I Love to Love - hit"; [seventh page, a list of names] "Herbie Baker, Gordon MacRae, Frank Sinatra, Tony Martin, Danny Kaye, Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, the Kings Men, Martin & Lewis" [eighth page, list of song titles] "Getting to Know You, Wilhelmina, Accentuate the Positive, If You Catch a Little Cold, I'm Late". Laraine Day (1920-2007) reached stardom as Nurse Lamont opposite Lew Ayres in a series of six Dr. Kildare films (1939-1942). Other starring roles for Day included Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent (1940), The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944), My Dear Secretary (1948) and The High and the Mighty (1954). She hosted a television program in 1951. In 1947, Laraine Day divorced her first husband, and - in defiance of a court order - journeyed to Mexico to marry Leo Durocher. The unlikely pairing of Day, a strict Mormon tee-totaler, and Durocher, a notorious hell-raiser from his playing days who retained his bad boy image (including gambler and pool shark) and was constantly battling team and league management, was grist for the gossip mills. The resulting publicity, amidst allegations of adultery, child abandonment and bigamy, undoubtedly boosted the career of Day, previously perceived as somewhat staid and aloof. Durocher and Day were a celebrity couple, with friends from the worlds of entertainment, professional sport and politics (counting Presidents among their fans). Durocher, who retired with the fifth most wins of any manager in baseball history, had his best years with the Giants, including the miraculous come-from behind 1951 season, culminating in the Bobby Thomson playoff homer that wrested the NL Pennant from the Dodgers, and the 1954 season, when the Giants crushed the heavily favored Cleveland Indians for the World Championship, and Durocher's only World Series ring. The players mentioned by Day were all members of that 1954 team. Slightly creased. Slightly worn at edges. Paperclip indentation on first page and verso of last page. Otherwise, fine condition.
