Description: A large very old oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (40 1/2" by 28 1/2" framed), the subject a clipper ship by moonlight, its position lights breaking through the night, other ships and their lights, and the moon's reflection on the waters completing the image. I have not been able to locate a signature. The subject was a favorite of American artist James Gale Tyler (1855-1931), so it is possible that this is a Tyler, but he was heavily forged in his lifetime. This painting certainly dates to 1900 or before. It is in as-found condition: dirty, loose on the stretchers, has some small unrepaired tears, some blanching, missing paint at bottom left; a restoration would definitely be able to bring this work back to good condition.
