Description: From Ojai, California: an absolutely majestic Otto & Vivika Heino centerpiece bowl. A rare, early piece by the celebrated masters of California studio pottery, this stoneware bowl is an absolute beauty to behold! Enormous yet elegant, perfectly potted, body expertly and evenly formed, with substantial foot. This piece dates from between 1955-1963, when Otto was Head of Ceramics Department at the Chouinard Art Institute, Los Angeles, and is signed with the early Chouinard Art Institute mark (as confirmed by The Marks Project online). Bowl is in mint condition; no chips or cracks; rings like a bell! Bowl measures just under 13 inches in diameter, and is 6 inches high. Weight is just over 8 pounds. This bowl foreshadows so many of the qualities for which the Heinos are now so famous: deep, lustrous glazes, wonderfully speckled pattern in rich, earthy colors on a perfectly potted piece of art pottery!
