They were the first acoustic guitars with a 14th-fret neck joint, and the first expressly designed for steel strings. Interestingly, this innovation came about, in part, courtesy of the banjo. During the 1920s, in a quest for more volume, many guitarists had converted their instruments from gut to steel strings. In the interest of keeping up with trends (and being heard in ever larger and louder ensembles), banjo players — important rhythm keepers in bands of the era — became intrigued by these steel-stringed guitars, which were at least as loud as their banjos, and far more resonant.
