Description: Up for sale is the first stamp ever issued by Latvia. It was issued in 1918 at the end of WWI. It is red and features the Latvian Coat of Arms. The denomination is 5 Kopeks.***Stamps are unused and in great shape! Still connected, uncut. Light hinge mark on back. Great Shape! 100% original. See pics for details. The thing that makes this stamp truly remarkable is the story of its creation. During WWI the area of Latvia was under German control. When the German army pulled out, Latvia decided to declare its independence. Due to the war there were paper shortages, so the new government got creative when making the first stamps. They were printed on the backs of old German War Maps that were left behind! A section of map can be seen when the stamp is turned over.***These stamps are printed on a map, however, they are from the edge of the map so only the black border can be seen. Back is very clean as a result. This is the perforated version which is harder to find.Stamp will be shipped safely at the letter rate between layers of cardstock. A very cool stamp and a great piece of Postal and WWI history!
