Following the success of her fourth studio album, Dónde Están los Ladrones?, in Latin America, Spain, the Middle East, and the Latin community in the United States, Shakira was urged by American singer Gloria Estefan to venture into English-language pop music, believing in her potential to cross over. Initially hesitant, Shakira decided to learn English proficiently to compose songs in the language. The album's title reflects Shakira's perspectives on love and music.
