Description: Leaves of Grass – Walt WhitmanIllustrations by Lewis C. Daniel A work in progress through over four decades, Leaves of Grass contains poetry that spans the human condition from the perspective of both the mind and the body. Many 19th century critics derided Whitman's poetry and during this time Leaves of Grass was considered controversial. The large format (8.5”x 11”) hard cover book was published in 1940 by Doubleday, Doran & Co. It has lovely illlustrations by Lewis C. Daniel in both color and black and white specifically done for this volume. The introduction is by Christopher Morley. The volume is bound with green burlap cloth boards; the spine of the book has faded to a light green. There are a couple of minor stains on the cover. There is also some discoloration on the inside cover pages, but it appears to come from something underneath the paper. The pages are clean and the binding tight. The book comes in the original paper slipcase; the outside of case shows some staining and degradation. From colophon: 'This edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass was planned by Richard Ellis and produced under his direction. The illustrations by Lewis C. Daniel were reproduced in Similetone and Intaprint by the Zeese-Wilkinson Company of Long Island City. The paper was specially made for this new edition by the P. H. Glatfelter Company of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania. The Composition, Printing and Binding by The Haddon Craftsmen of Camden, New Jersey. The book belonged to my great grandfather. It’s been stored in a box in my dad’s closet for years. If you have any questions, please message me and I’ll be happy to reply.
