The two were involved in a complex triangular relationship with Lytton Strachey and shared a Wiltshire farmhouse, Ham Spray, with Strachey and Dora Carrington (subject of the 1995 film "Carrington" with Alex Kingston playing Frances.) While working at a London bookshop owned by David Garnett, Frances became acquainted with Ralph Partridge, an employee at the Hogarth Press. She met Leonard and Virginia Woolf soon after. Ralph and Frances fell in love in 1923, but did not marry until Strachey died a decade later, in 1932, and Carrington, out of grief, committed suicide. Ralph and Frances lived happily at Ham Spray until Ralph's death in 1960. Frances went on to become a memoirist of the Bloomsbury group, and published seven volumes of diaries. Her story seemed as much literature as life, even as it was lived. When Ralph Partridge and Frances Marshall fell in love in 1923, Ralph was married to Dora Carrington, who was in love with Strachey; but Strachey was in love with Ralph, who, Frances wrote, was "hopelessly heterosexual" and could not reciprocate. All, of course, lived in the same house. According to her obituary, "Mrs. Partridge was an observer of the romances, illegitimate births and suicides that formed the backdrop of Bloomsbury life. As decades passed, she became the last firsthand authority on the group's mores and traditions. She was known as a sprightly woman who gave generously of her time and alcohol to the many who came to tap her memory. She could ably mimic how Strachey sat and smoked with his long fingers, details that made her a favorite of Bloomsbury biographers." Frances died in 2004 at age 103. Her books, some with the Ham Spray call label, ended up at the bookshop frequented by Bloomsbury figures where she got her start.
