Description: This is an original poster printed during WW2 to support the war effort. Let's give him enough and on time / Norman RockwellRockwell, Norman, 1894-1978, artistCreated: 1942. The US Army commissioned Let's give him enough and on time in 1942 as a propaganda piece to encourage war-time manufacturing. The Army placed posters of the original painting in factories around the United States that were manufacturing products for WW2. Examples: The ripped uniform is a message that soldier apparel was desperately needed. The machine gun was a WW1 vintage water-cooled machine gun that took three soldiers to operate. A modern machine gun had been developed, but production was slow. This poster was a motivator. It is framed in a fine custom wooden and glass frame. LET'S GIVE HIM ENOUGH AND ON TIMEfrom Norman Rockwell: Illustrator:"A fine contribution to the war effort, 1943. When, during the recent war, the Ordnance Department gave me the suggestion for this poster, I made a rough sketch which was approved by the Army. Then a neighbor of mine, Colonel Fairfax Ayers, a retired Army officer -- his portrait appears on page 124 -- arranged to have a gun crew and machine gun sent to my studio. They arrived in a jeep, to the great excitement of our Arlington boys. The gunner insisted that I picture his gun in gleaming good order, but he let me rip his shirt...This final poster represents one of our grand soldiers in a tough spot on the firing line. The coil of cartridge tape and the empty cartridges show that he is about down to his last shot. N.R."--This painting was the basis for Ordnance posters that were distributed during WWII. Most posters were vertically oriented because they were intended to hang in weapons factories and inspire the workers to increase production. Rockwell was not told to paint in a vertical format, instead he created a large horizontal painting. It was still immensely popular and was the only battle scene that Rockwell produced for the Army.
