Description: Two original LIFE magazines. I put these two together because both contain photos of popular World War II era pinup sensation Chili Williams. In the September 27, 1943 issue her photo appears on page 130 in the "Pictures to the Editors" section. It's of her in a polka-dot bathing suit. The picture is black and white and measures just 4" x 6 1/4". It was shot by Ewing Krainin. Just this one shot of her brought in hundreds of thousands of requests for prints from GIs the world over. She was then featured in an article titled "Speaking of Pictures...Chili Williams is Working for the Army" which appeared in the April 10, 1944 issue on pages 12, 13 and 15. These numerous photos of her were also shot by Ewing Krainin. The camouflage section at Fort Belvoir, Va. used the pictures in their lantern-slide lectures on camouflage. There are also some shots of her done in Hollywood. The magazines feature lots of other great articles, ads and photos, just like all the issues of LIFE over its long printing run. What makes the ones of this era really interesting and special are the numerous articles, photos and ads that tie directly into World War II. The following info appeared on page 11 of the 4-10-44 issue: TIME, LIFE, FORTUNE and ARCHITECTURAL FORUM have been cooperating with the War Production Board ever since Jan. 1943, on the conservation of paper. During the year 1944 these four publications of the TIME group are budgeted to use 73,000,000 pounds (1450 freight carloads) less paper than in 1942. In view of resulting shortages of copies, please share your copy of LIFE with your friends. I've included lots of photos of the magazines, including the contents page of each, and the front and back cover of each. Both are in overall good condition, considering they are over 70 years old and have been handled and read numerous times. The paper during these years is thinner (per info above), and has yellowed. Covers are intact. The center pages of the 9-27-43 issue have come loose from under the staples, but could easily be returned to their proper place with the help of a little piece of tape. I'll mention several of the great ads here: Claudette Colbert in a "Calox Tooth Powder" ad; a great Studebaker War ad; Bob Hope in an R.C. Cola ad; Ronald Reagan mentioned in a "This Is The Army" movie ad; Beautifully done General Motors 2-page spread; Campbell's Soup "How to Pull A Hot Dinner Out of a Jeep" ad; and many, many more. The April 10, 1944 issue has 124 pages. The September 27, 1947 issue has 132 pages. They both measure 10 1/2" x 14". I've priced these two magazines at $27.00. compared to the many other listings, this is a very competitive price. That price includes USPS Priority Mailing in a large bubble envelope. This mailing cost is quite expensive, so the $27.00 is an excellent deal. I'll place each magazine in a plastic sleeve and add a piece of white foam board. This is for mailing to any address in the United States. Any other locations would require the buyer to pay all mailing costs. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
