Description: Offered is the antique leather-bound book "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth", written by Thomas Jefferson and published in 1904 by the Government Printing Office in Washington, DC. The book, sometimes called "The Jefferson Bible", created by Jefferson by literally cutting (with a razor) and pasting (with glue) sections of the Bible he agreed with, was never published in Jefferson's lifetime and this is one of the earliest publications of the work. It consists of copies of each page of the original, with a 19-page introduction by Cyrus Adler, an American religious scholar. This copy was a gift presentation from Thomas W. Hardwick in February, 1906. Hardwick, a Georgia politician, was a Congressman at the time; he later became a US Senator and then Governor of Georgia. I do not know if the handwritten presentation inscription was written by Hardwick himself or by a staff member. This is an uncommon find; the addition of the Hardwick presentation may make it unique. The book is approx. 8 3/4" x 5 1/2". It is in good to very good condition. The red leather cover has light to moderate wear, mostly on the spine, where some small bits of the surface have worn off, and there are a few small areas of light surface soiling. The gold designs on the front, back and spine are still shiny. There is some wear to the gold words on the spine but they are still mostly present and shiny. There is no cracking inside either the front or back cover. The marble endpapers are mostly clean. The back endpaper is detached, but present. I see no missing or torn pages and, with the exception of the endpaper, all of the pages are well-attached to the binding. They have yellowed slightly, have some light foxing and spotting and there is a paperclip outline from an old paperclip attachment on several pages but otherwise they are overall reasonably clean and clear. I see no writing in the book other than the gift inscription. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
