Joseph Smit (Lisse, South Holland, July 18, 1836 - November 4, 1929) was a Dutch zoological illustrator.Smit was born in Lisse. He received his first commission from Hermann Schlegel at the Leiden Museum to work on the illustration of a book of birds of the Dutch eastern islands. In 1866 he was invited to the United Kingdom by Philip Sclater to make lithographs for Sclater's Exotic Ornithology. He also made drawings for Joseph Wolf's Zoological Sketches, as well as monographs on Daniel Giraud Elliot's Phasianidaes and Paradiseas. From the 1870s, he worked on the Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum (1874-1898, edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe), and later produced Lord Lilford's Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands.His son Pierre Jacques Smit (1863-1960) was also a zoological illustrator. The central element of the work are two sharpbills (Oxyruncus cristatus) The sharpbill (Oxyruncus cristatus) is a species of passerine bird, the only one belonging to the family Oxyruncidae.
