The author has been a keen student of steam engines for over seventy years, part of an eventful career that includes photography, gliding, and scientific research. In his extensive travels, he came across many preserved steam locomotives, often the product of Manning Wardle & Co. The book begins by sketching the history of earlier designs and constructions that led on to the formation of the firm at the Boyne Engine Works in Leeds. Although famous for their industrial engines, Manning Wardle designed and built many of the early locomotives for Light Railways throughout Britain. There were also many unconventional products, including crane engines and those for steam tramways. Of the two thousand engines built, about four hundred were exported, and could be found all over the world. The author, who has been assiduously tracking down these engines over many years, provides us with a very readable account of their general history. At the end, he deals with all the engines preserved in eleven countries, some just on display and others in working condition. The book is excellently illustrated with the author s own photographs, together with contributions from other major collections. All pictures are of the actual item.
