Description: Born in 1923, Loretta Cain was a prominent New Mexico artist. She painted for nearly 70 years until she became blind. She also owned an art gallery in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1995, Cain moved to Silver City and opened another art gallery. Cain painted in the Impressionist style and used many colors in her works. Her subject matter was often landscapes and scenes of everyday life in New Mexico. Framed, this original watercolor painting measures 22"x18" and is unlike Cain's vibrantly colored oil paintings. This work is comprised of only a few colors; primarily blue, green, and gray. Despite the limited color palette, the artist has used a spectrum of tones to create the sense that a larger variety of colors have been applied in this picture. The subject matter is typical of her other pieces. In this image, Cain has depicted a row of trees along a rocky stream. The view is from behind some large boulders in the foreground in order to make the viewer feel as though they are standing there looking at the scenery in real life. This, too, is a common feature of Cain's works.
