After being paralyzed by Bane in "Knightfall", Bruce Wayne entrusts Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) with the mantle of Batman. Valley’s version of Batman becomes more violent, adopting increasingly brutal methods that alienate Gotham’s citizens and allies. "Knightquest" significantly impacted comic culture by examining the darker implications of Batman’s role and introducing new questions about heroism, identity, and mental health. The storyline’s exploration of an unhinged Batman was controversial, pushing the boundaries of Batman's ethos and influencing later story arcs that explore his psychology and limits.
