Description: Sullivan Chicago Stock Exchange Balustrade BookmarkThe design of this bookmark is based on a portion of the painted decoration done in 1893-94 by Louis Sullivan for the Chicago Stock Exchange’s Trading Room. Sullivan designed a multi-colored wall stencil decoration that covered the top portion of the walls and selected areas of the Trading Room’s ceiling. The Chicago Stock Exchange building was designed in the Prairie School/Modernist styles of the architect Louis Sullivan and his associate, George Grant Elmslie. Louis Sullivan is known for his stylized organic ornamentation that combined simple geometric patterns with stylized plant forms. His ornamentation developed out of the stylized flora of the English designer Owen Jones. Sullivan added his own peculiar angularity to the patterns. The design on this bookmark captures the lush and colorful organic ornamentation of Sullivan’s original design.
