Description: "Louis Wain invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world". Broadcast in 1925 by H.G. Wells, these words characteristically foretold the future of the Wain cat which has, once more, become the most recognizable image in cat art. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain’s work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972. Since then, Louis Wain’s cats have become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This biography shows many images for the first time — roughly 300 plates of richness and variety — all originating from the original artwork. Despite his fame Wain never made much money, being highly impractical in business matters, and during the war, he began to suffer extreme poverty. Always somewhat eccentric, he began to develop signs of a serious mental disorder. Previously a mild and gentle man, he became increasingly suspicious, abusive, and occasionally even violent. In June 1924, he was certified insane and committed to the Surrey County Asylum at Tooting. He was transferred to Bethlem Hospital after a campaign by admirers of his work, including Prime Minister Ramsey Macdonald. He continued drawing until near the end of his life, and exhibitions of his work were held in London in 1931 and 1937, as well as a memorial exhibition shortly after his death. He died at Napsbury on 4 July 1939.
