President Johnson visited Vietnam in October 1966 as part of a surprise trip after attending the Manila Summit on Vietnam: Manila Summit: Johnson attended the summit on October 25, 1966. Corregidor: Johnson visited Corregidor, the site of a long US troop hold-out against the Japanese during World War II. Cam Ranh Bay: Johnson visited US soldiers at Cam Ranh Bay Air Force Base in South Vietnam. He awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant Marty A.
