Aretas III of Nabataea kneeling to right, holding reins and olive branch; behind, camel standing right / Jupiter driving quadriga left, holding reins and hurling thunderbolt. 18 mm, 3.75 g. This coin was struck to commemorate the victory of Scaurus over Aretas III of Nabataea in 62 BC. Aretas III had invaded Judaea to support the claim of John II Hyrcanus. Scaurus was serving as proquaestor in Syria, under Pompey, and forced Aretas III to leave Judaea, and pay tribute. good Fine, hoard patina. Rare with a British provenance.
