Volume I: entitled: "Relation du Voyage" and containing numerous in-text wood engravings. Volume II: consists of two texts, the first by M. Vignes entitled "De Petra A Palmyre", the second by MM. Mauss & Henri Sauvaire entitled "Voyage de Jerusalem à Karak et à Chaubak", and containing numerous full-page charts. Some age wear on original wrappers with closed tear on front wrapper of first volume (professionally taped) and left corner of back wrapper torn. Minor age-toning along edges of wrappers. Sporadic and minor foxing on very first and very last pages of both volumes. Text in French. Binding in overall fine, interior in very good condition. vg. The Duc de Luynes (1802-1867), eminent numismatist, scholar, archaeologist and collector of art, directed and sponsored this important expedition to Palestine, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon in 1864. Louis Vignes (1831-1896), a French marine officer who started taking photographs in the Holy Land using the Calotype system since 1859. He accompanied Honore d'Albert, Duc de Luynes at the end of September in 1864 on an archaeological journey from Beirut to Palmyra. His greatest achievement was the exploration of the Dead Sea basin at the same year. Vignes took many photographs during his voyages and explorations in the Holy Land.
