On August 6th, 1945 McGlohon’s B-29 piloted by Jack Economos departed on a routine photography reconnaissance mission to photograph potential targets near Hiroshima, Kure and farther north. McGlohon’s B-29 approached Hiroshima at about 27,000 feet when Enola Gay’s “Little Boy” exploded and began to form a mushroom cloud. McGlohon running the cameras captured the only photographs snapped looking straight down on Hiroshima as the mushroom cloud was enveloping.
