Dick, Published by Harper and Brothers, New York, USA, 1836, First American Edition ("1836" on Title Pages), 1836, Hardcover Book, 393 pages, Volume One only (of a 2-volume set), This is an antique, 1836, book by Maria Edgeworth (1768 -- 1849). She was a prolific Anglo-Irish author. Maria Edgeworth's Preface in this book is dated May 31, 1825. She states that her father began writing the book about 50 years before that, but that she completed it in 1825. It is intended for kids age 10 to 14. It describes the adventures of a brother and sister, Harry and Lucy. This is the First American Edition, published in 1836. It was first published in Great Britain in 1825. This 1st American Edition includes 2 fine, 1st Edition, steel engravings (see pics). The artworks are the illustrated Frontispiece and the illustrated Title Page. They are both by US artist, William Page, and they were both steel-engraved by US engraver, Alexander L. Dick. Below each engraving is a caption that describes the artwork in relation to the text. William Page (1811 -- 1885) was an American painter and portrait artist. Alexander L. Dick (1805 -- 1855) was a New York master engraver, who came to USA from Scotland. Each page measures about 7.5 inches by 4.5 inches. The book is solid and very legible: an interesting, antique, 1836 book. The publisher was a well-known New York book publisher. Fair Condition [ Covers are scraped and edge-worn (see pics), Spine-covering appears to have been repaired, 1st 8 pages of text have a small damp-stain on outer edge (including Frontispiece and Title Page; see pics), 393-page text is lightly foxed throughout, first 2 blank pages have name of former owner (one is "Mark Packard"), several pages of text have been bound incorrectly (pgs 205-216 are bound in twice, while pgs 181-192 are missing), one blank page near back is slightly torn; otherwise, book is solid, tight with strong hinges, is easily legible, has its covers, is strongly printed, and has 2 beautiful, 1st Edition artworks by US artist William Page, steel-engraved by Alexander L.
