MARIE DRESSLER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 284146 MARIE DRESSLER Signed autograph letter (undated), declaring herself glad to be leaving New York for California Autograph Letter signed: "Marie Dressler", 2 pages, 5¾x7¾ integral leaf. New York, N.Y., no date. On letterhead of the Savoy Plaza to "Dear Howard". In full: "Thanks dear for the lovely flowers & kind invitation, but I am off tomorrow for Calif. & oh so glad as I just cannot take in another thing. Am so glad you wrote as I had lost your address & could not thank you for the last beautiful one. My love to all & again thanks". Marie Dressler (1868-1934) was already a star of vaudeville and the Broadway stage when she made her film debut opposite Charlie Chaplin in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914). She preferred stage roles for many years, but returned to film stardom (a top box office draw) in the early 1930s. She won the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill (1931) and was nominated for the same award the next year for Emma. The letter was probably written to Howard Strickling, head of publicity at MGM and a close friend of Dressler. When she learned she was dying of cancer, she gave her Oscar statuette to Strickling. Edges and corners lightly worn and toned. Horizontal fold crease. Otherwise, fine condition.
