Description: Marriage is Possible by Margaret Widdemer; Center Books / Sun Dial reprint, DJ. Reprint presses were a popular business model in the book world during the late 1800s and early 1900s. (Check out this interesting site for more information: https://seriesofseries.owu.edu/ ) These reprint houses were the forerunners of the "Book Club" publishers that became popular in the mid-1900s. They would purchase remaindered copies, buy or rent plates, and then publish inexpensive editions of popular novels and market them at a reduced price. These bargain editions were generally very similar to the original editions, using the same artwork, block, and advertising text. Because they used much less expensive materials - cheaper paper, lower-quality boards - these reprint editions are difficult to find in good condition. Here is a copy of the Center Books reprint of Margaret Widdemer's 1936 novel, Marriage is Possible. Widdemer was a prolific, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, active from the 1930s through the 1960s. This copy is in very good condition with many of the features common to this kind of book. The dust jacket is present and intact and presents well, with significant wear, including edge wear, small tears, paint chipping, and various marks. See photos for details. The cloth is grey tweed and the boards are in good shape with a normal (for its age) amount of shelf wear, especially at the top and base of the spine and a couple of the corners. Interior is generally clean and unmarked with the exception of an owner name and date inscription (Jan. 1943) on the inside front endpaper. The paper is well-tanned, as is just about always the case with these inexpensive reprint editions. Endpapers and spine are intact. All books are individually evaluated, and photos are of the actual book.
