Description: Museum of Primitive Art (New York, N.Y.), Gustave Schindler and Franyo Schindler (1966). Masks and Sculptures from the Collection of Gustave and Franyo Schindler. Greenwich, Conn.,, Distributed by the New York Graphic Society. This is a handsomely produced catalog from 1966 of an exhibition at the venerated and long-defunct Museum of Primitive Art in NYC of works of what was known as the time "Primitive Art". It is particularly strong in African works of art with works from Oceania and Greece and the Ancient Near East. The Schindler collection was one of the premier early collection of such art. Most of the collection was given to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts with some works going to the Israel Museum. The catalog lists 115 works with 52 of them illustrated in crisp black and white images. There is very limited text. Check out my other listings of African, Oceanic, Native American art and art history, and other regions of world art and cultures for additional rare finds. Included are many additional catalogs from the Museum of Primitive Art.
