The frame and mount shown are not included. Matchless G50With hindsight it seems surprising that the G50 did not come into being earlier. Although clearly derived from their AJS 7R, AMC were committed to the development of the G45 twin and wouldn’t divert their attention. As a result it was not until 1958 that a 500cc motorcycle derived from the 7R appeared. The new machine shared the AJS' 78mm bore with a stroke of 90mm giving a 496cc capacity with the prototype engine undergoing intensive development through 1958 to prepare it for production in 1959. When the G50 was finally released the engine, although visually similar to the 7R used its own dedicated castings giving a claimed power output of 51bhp at 7200rpm. Other parts followed the same patterns as those used by the contemporary 7R with only a difference in colour and badge to distinguish between them, a fact that has led to seemingly never ending discussions between enthusiasts as to which is the most attractive. Factory production ended in 1963 although new machines have been built more recently to satisfy the popular demand for riders to compete in classic events.
