Description: From the back cover: "ABOUT THE COVER - Coumadin is an anticoagulant. In the 1920's, cattle in the northern United States and Canada mysterious bled to death after eating moldy clover. In the 1940's, the chemistry lab of Karl Paul link at the University of Wisconsin isolated the compound - coumadin - found in moldy clover, which was responsible for the deaths. After its discovery, coumadin was sold as warfarin, pesticide to kill rats and mice. A few years later it was discovered to be an effective and relatively safe treatment to prevent thrombosis and embolism. It is still used today for that purpose; however, we now realize that its activity must be monitored by frequent blood tests to ensure that a sufficient and safe blood level is achieved."
