Description: Meiji 33, April 28 (1900) 38 Bluff Yamate Yokohama Postcard John Cole Hartland This postcard, postmarked from Musashi, Meguro (now a city in Tokyo) and dated April 28, 1900, appears to suggest that the sender is returning an item purchased from Hartland for a refund, requesting that 7 yen be remitted to Aoyama Post Office. However, since we cannot read the entire text, this interpretation remains speculative. This card has two creases. John Cole Hartland (1860–1905?) came to Japan in 1885 and was employed as a tea merchant by Hunt & Co. in Kobe. The following year, when the company opened a branch in Yokohama, he was transferred there as manager. He worked for Hunt & Co. in Yokohama until 1905, after which he is no longer listed in Japan. Hartland was an early photography enthusiast, taking over 150 photographs during his stay in Japan. These are now part of the Pitt Rivers Museum collection at the University of Oxford. Number 38 Yamate was located along the Bluff Park (see photo...photo and map are not a part of this sale).
