Description: Melpomene Greek Muse and Patron of Tragedy holding Tragic Mask Wall Statue. This is my best guess and I could be way off. This item up for sale is made of a type of material like I have never seen. It is not ceramic nor cement, but some type of clay similar to cement? Height 10 1/4 inches X 3 1/2 inches X 1 1/2 inches from wall. No chips and no breaks. Looks like there is a rub on one leg above the knee, but there is not, it is just a glare. Unsigned, maker unknown. Selling as found. Please advise if you know. I feel if anything else she as a Greek Goddess. This is what I have found in research. Melpomene was one of the nine Mousal (Muses), the goddesses of music, song and dance. In the Classical area, when the Mousal were assigned from artistic and literacy spheres, Melpomene was named Muse of Tragedy. In the guise she was portrayed holding a tragic mask or sword, and sometimes wearing a wreath of Ivy and Cothurnus boots. Her name was derived from the Greek verb Mello or mel-omani meaning "to celebrate with dance and song" Melpomene is the Ancient Greek muse of tragedy, and she is invoked when a tragedy is either written or performed. However, aside from the story of her birth and the fact that she is often associated with Dionysius, not much is known about her. Dionysus The Greek Wine Goddess was often shown with Melpomene. Life of MelpomeneMelpomene had eight other sisters and each one of them was a muse like herself. It is said that the nine muses came into being because they were the daughters of Zeus, the father of the gods, and Mnemosyne, the Titan goddess of memory. Zeus and Mnemosyne came together nine days in a row, and each of these days, one of the muses was conceived. Her sisters include Caliope, Clio, Euterpe, Erato, Polyhymnia, Thalia, and Urania and they were born around the same time as she was. As a result of this, the muses were depicted as having a close relationship and were often depicted together. However, not much is known about her besides that, aside from the fact that she was thought to be the mother of some of the sirens. Please ask any questions. MR1Top
