The Irish Brigade was known in part for its famous war cry, the "faugh a ballagh", which is an anglicization of the Irish phrase meaning "clear the way". According to Fox's Regimental Losses, of all Union army brigades, only two suffered more combat dead than the Irish Brigade during America's Civil War. Meagher, being convicted of sedition in Ireland, was first sentenced to death, but received transportation for life to Australia. In 1852 he escaped and made his way to New York City where he settled and lectured on the Irish cause. At the beginning of the Civil War, Meagher recruiting and lead the famed Irish Brigade, and encouraging support among Irish immigrants for the Union. It became known as the “Fighting 69th”. With the beginning of the war, Meagher volunteered to fight and the regiment was initially added to General Irvin McDowell’s Army of Northeastern Virginia. The Irish brigade fought during the Peninsula Campaign at Fair Oaks, during the Seven Days Battles at Gaines’s Mill, Savage’s Station and Malvern Hill. It fought at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Appomattox Court House in addition to other locations. Meagher was later assigned to duty in the Western Theater in 1864. He commanded the District of Etowah in the Department of the Cumberland until late 1865, and briefly commanded a provisional division within the Army of Ohio until the end of the war. Handsomely bound in tan-colored covers, with bright, sharp, gold, background lettering, and a decorative scene on the cover, the book is sharp, bright and clean. The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or edge wear. The book has solid binding throughout. The book features a handsome, gold-gilt image of General Meagher on horseback with this sword drawn on the cover. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent, bright white condition. The book is free of any writing, smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboards or other markings. There isn’t a mark in the book. It is not an ex-library book. The book has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book features a frontispiece illustration of General Meagher and contains other illustrations throughout the book. 496 pages plus 23 page Appendix and 4 page index.
