Description: Miguel Hidalgo was the “father” of Mexico’s War for Independence from Spain, begun in September 1810 when Hidalgo gave a speech in the town of Dolores railing against the “gachupines” (Spanish slang for “blockheads”) who ruled Mexico. Stirred to action by the Grito de Dolores, thousands of peasants rose in rebellion to follow him. But Hidalgo had been trained as a priest, not a soldier, and had neither training nor experience. After initial tactical successes, he was captured by royalist forces, defrocked, tortured, convicted of treason, and executed (probably by firing squad) in July 1811. A fellow clergyman, Jose Maria Morelos, assumed command of the insurgents.
