Description: A large oil on canvas, 31" by 49" in original strip frame, titled on reverse "Spanish Shadows", signed there and again at lower left in the wet paint, by noted Mid Century California artist Paul Blaine Henrie (1932-1999). Henrie has created with his palette knife and typically thickly-applied gobs of rich paint, a sunny plaza scene with architecture, palms, and figures, all in his unique instantly recognizable style and with the equally recognizable intense colors. Henrie was born in Tampa, Florida and was in California by 1960, in Carmel, and later Laguna Beach, where he became a fixture in the local art scene. He painted Laguna, other California locations, and traveled to Mexico, Tahiti and New Orleans and Hawaii, among other spots. Because his paintings were so quickly produced, and because he was so prolific, he had been accused of being a commercial, money-driven painter. This work, circa 1970's, is in good vintage condition. There is some canvas dimpling at upper left to the left of the bell tower. Gold strip is missing from left and bottom of framing, and there is a slight warp on the stretcher.
