MIGHTY BABY - S/T 1969 HEADY UK PROGRESSIVE PSYCH SEALED CD +5xtks as THE ACTION

Description: MIGHTY BABY – Mighty Baby. Rock Fever Music RFM 006. German release. SEALED NEW CD. Originally issued in 1969 on Head Records. This edition issued in 2001. Includes informative/photo insert booklet and 5 bonus tracks as by pre-Mighty Baby group The Action. Features the same track line-up as the earlier issued Big Beat CD. The bonus tracks later appeared as part of the Rolled Gold album. MEMBERS: Alan "Bam" King (vocals, guitar), Roger Powell (drums), Michael Evans (bass), Martin Stone (guitar), and Ian Whiteman (piano, woodwinds). TRACKS: Egyptian Tomb, A Friend You Know But Never See, I’ve Been Down So Long, Same Way From The Sun, House Without Windows, Trials Of A City, I’m From The Country, and At A Point Between Fate And Destiny. BONUS TRACKS, as by The Action, pre-Mighty Baby: Only Dreaming, Dustbin Full Of Rubbish, Understanding Love, Favourite Days, and A Saying For Today. DESCRIPTION: This has to be one of the best examples of Brit acid rock there is. The opener Egyptian Tomb shows the band in a nutshell: fluid guitar work, tight sax comp, cool interplay. A classic! And almost all of the songs are long stoned acid jams. They are simply so good at this, especially the guitar plays like an acid dream. And the singer has a high and nasal voice, reminiscent of the early Caravan sound. Most of the band had previously been part of The Action, who’s George Martin produced recordings are worth investigating. The band plays tight, incredible improvisations. If you like the late 60's acid rock sound, this is your album. Like the late Quicksilver Messenger Service or the Grateful Dead but perhaps more "stoned" in sound and definitely British. Highly recommended! SIDE BAR: I ran into this album in the early 70’s in a cutout bin and had always been curious about the Head label (as well as being bowled over by the music I discovered), especially as my copy is the US release of a British label distributed via Chess Records (a bit of an oddity to say the least considering the style of music associated with Chess and its subsidiaries). Of course the cover art alone sold me on this album, but what of the label itself? Head Records was owned by John Curd, who at onetime had been a roadie for Pre-Baby band The Action. John had raised a bit of capital through the operation of a van rental service transporting bands and their equipment to and from gigs. He first offered his services as Mighty Baby’s manager (he also suggested their name; they had briefly been known as Azoth) and as they were without a label he felt it a sound investment in issuing their debut recording, though he had to make a cash deal with Blackhill Enterprises as the former Action members were still under contract to Blackhill (some of their clients included Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, Marc Bolan, Edgar Broughton Band, Roy Harper, and later Ian Dury and The Clash). Unfortunately the source of funding to start up both the label and his van service got him into a bit of trouble resulting in a brief state paid vacation forcing the shut down to both ventures. I do know Head issued a single by Heavy Jelly in the Spring of 1969 and had an album by them planned for release in early 1970, but I’m not sure what else was issued by the label. NOTE TO POTENTIAL BUYERS: If the tray card, bar code, jewel case, insert, or digi-pak is punched, marked, or cut in any manner, denoting a promotional/review copy, I will state that as part of the item description. Also if an issue is a "music club" edition, that will be noted in the item description. (The below information last updated 10/08/22) If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. Hopefully, sharing some of this information in my descriptions will help educate and enhance your listening experience. PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER CURRENTLY LISTED ITEMS AND EBAY STORE. GENERAL INFORMATION: All CDs come sealed in standard jewel cases and are US releases unless noted otherwise. Mini-Jackets, digi-paks, and variable packaging will also be noted. Any item that does not come sealed or include an outer sleeve will be placed inside of an outer sleeve at the time it is received by me. All items that do not come in an outer packaging wrap are inspected by me prior to shipping. It is not unusual to find small/tiny imperfections on the play side of the CD disc, especially on European manufactured CDs; these small imperfections do no affect the playback of the disc. Also an unsealed jewel case may show light signs of warehouse/transit storage wear on the outer surface of the jewel case. If an unsealed jewel case is received by me broken, it will be replaced with a new jewel case before shipping; sealed CDs received with minor cracked/damaged jewel cases will be noted as such in the item’s description and will be shipped as is. ABBREVIATIONS: SS or SLD: Still Sealed or Sealed. Short abbreviation that will appear in the title line of my listings. This item is new and unplayed. Also appears in the listing description as Sealed CD or Factory Sealed CD. NEW CD: This item is new and unplayed, but was received from a supplier without being shrink wrapped or cellophane wrapped; more common on imports but also many of the smaller independent US labels do not seal their CDs; some have it both ways (for which I have no prior knowledge of or choice when placing my orders). Other companies use resealable clear outer sleeves which are used on some import and domestic releases. If I receive an item this way it will be shipped as I received it and not opened up. Items received unwrapped are placed inside of a resealable clear outer mylar sleeve at the time they are received. GFC or GF: Gate fold cover, refers to a style of mini-jacket CDs. S/T: Self-Titled 2/1: This denotes that 2 albums are on 1 single CD. REMAST: Remastered. More specific sourcing will follow within the item’s description when available. OOP: Out Of Print. MIX: This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style. XT, XTKS, or #XTKS: Usually in lower case type as part of the title line, denotes bonus tracks on this release (extra track, extra tracks, or the number of extra tracks). ULC, LRC, etc.: Upper Left Corner, Lower Right Corner, etc. used in referencing the area of a defect or blemish to the jewel case or packaging.
