Benjamin Franklin class SSBN) - a series of twelve US strategic nuclear submarines of the second generation. The third series of nuclear submarines with ballistic missiles "Lafayette". The boats were armed with sixteen ballistic missiles for the Polaris A3 submarines. In the early 1970s, all boats were re-equipped with Poseidon missiles, and in the early 1980s, six submarines received Trident-1 missiles. Together with the submarines of the types “George Washington”, “Eten Allen”, “Lafayette” and “James Madison” in the 1960s, the “Benjamin Franklin” made up a fleet of 41 strategic missile-carriers of the US Navy. The boats were named after prominent figures in American history and received the nickname "41 on Guard for Freedom"   They were built by two subseries of six boats. SSBNs No. 640-645 were ordered for the fleet in 1962, SSBN-654-659 were ordered a year later and were built according to a slightly modified project. Construction of type boats was carried out in 1962-1967 at the shipyards of Electric Boat (seven boats), Newport News (four boats) and Mare Island NSY (one boat).
