Similar to his first novel “The Joke”, “Life Is Elsewhere” it is set in Communist Czechoslovakia shortly after World War II. This is significant. Because if the main character Jaromil lived in Britain, for instance, “poetical”ambitions wouldn’t be so paradoxical. But in a totalitarian state, how does a romantic poet (a bad one at that) make a living? To answer this, Kundera’s poet Jaromil creates a dream poet counterpart. It is helpful at first but Jaromil is terribly flawed and he messes up terribly. If you have not read Kundera before I highly recommend “The Joke” first. He communicated so well life under totalitarianism. In addition, I would recommend reading Vaclav Havel “Living In Truth”. He and Kundera are closely tied to the Prague Spring 1968. “Living in Truth” magnifies what Kundera writes in “The Joke”, “Life Elsewhere” and “Laughter and Forgetting”.
