Description: The Minifon P55 portable wire recorder was manufactured by Protona in Germany in the 1940s-1950s. The Minifon P55 was originally designed as a portable dictating machine for traveling salesman in the 1940s. Also journalists. The small size being able to fit in a pocket so that it could be taken ‘on the road’. However, this didn’t take off. Instead it achieved much more success as a covert recording device for private investigators and detectives. It had a recording time of one hour, which, compared to other devices on the market at the time, was a very long recording. Wire recording devise. Wire is intact. This came from an antique dealer and collectors estate. He had it working on his note and priced at $495 in the late 1980s. I bought from his family. It is a wire recorder so fairly simple. It has a spot for two types of batteries One is a motor battery. Made in Germany. It has a Geiss America Chicago 45, Ill foil tag. Full instructions inside the lid. Wire is intact. This item is untested and no returns will be accepted. Known working I found priced at $1,200 and $1,000. I have no way to test and no desire to. It is a great collectors item. I include the original case. Case shows wear to the leather. There were accessories sold separately like a microphone watch where a wire ran down your sleeve for covert recording. Also I have seen additional wire spools on one German site. This was made for the U.S. Market probably in the early 50s.
