Description: “MIRROR VAN EYCK” 2015 DESIGNED BY THE ITALIAN ARTIST PIERO FORNASETTI (1913-1988) This striking mirror titled “Mirror Van Eyck”, made by the Fornasetti Atelier in Milan, Italy, is a design based on the mirror in Jan van Eyck’s (1390-1441) famous painting “The Arnolfini Portrait” to which Piero Fornasetti dedicated his creation. The Fornasetti mirror is a magical object that exudes mystery and enigma. The convex glass distorts and deceives, thus perfectly embodying the idea of optical deception and illusion. The hand-lacquered black mirror, made of a wood composite frame in the shape of a gear, inlaid with ten tiny convex mirrors and with a central convex glass mirror, measures 19 inches (48 cm) in diameter. The back of the mirror still has the two original price stickers from 2015. This mirror was purchased at the Barneys New York store which unfortunately is no longer open (the store closed in February 2020 after 97 years in business). The current retail price for this mirror, if ordered directly from Fornasetti Atelier is $2,950.00, and if purchased in the US from Bergdorf Goodman $2,695.00. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: The mirror frame black lacquer paint has a tiny surface chip (see close-up photo), otherwise the mirror is in very fine condition, clean like new with no evidence of any other damage. Piero Fornasetti was an Italian painter, sculptor and designer who during his career created over 13,000 products featuring his unmistakable design language. He is today considered to be one of the greatest creative talents of the 20th century. His muse, 19th-century operatic soprano Lina Cavalieri, inspired his most famous designs. Now reimagined by his son, Barnaba, the iconic legacy of art can be found in a line of home décor. Every piece created at the Fornasetti Atelier is painstakingly handcrafted.
