The illustrations are from the famous 1930 edition of Moby Dick published by the Lakeside Press, Chicago. In the 1920s, Lakeside Press decided to publish the finest editions of four American literary masterpieces. These are collectively known as Four American Books, and include Herman Melville's Moby Dick (illustrated by Rockwell Kent), Edgar Allen Poe's Tales (illustrated by W. A. Dwiggins), Henry David Thoreau's Walden (illustrated by Rudolf Ruzicka), and Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s Two Years Behind the Mast (illustrated by Edward A. Wilson). Of these four books, Moby Dick became the most famous and sought after. William Kittredge of the Lakeside Press said that Kent's Moby Dick "would be the greatest illustrated book ever done in America". The book was so popular that it sold out quickly even though it was the height of the Great Depression. Following the success of this book, Random House released a single volume version of the 3-volume Lakeside Press version that faithfully reproduced the Rockwell Kent illustrations. This Limited Edition from the Folio Society is a facsimile of the Random House single volume version. It has been typeset in Fournier at the Folio Society, printed on Abbey Wove paper by Memminger Mediencentrum, Germany, and bound by Real Lachenmaier, Germany, in Wright's Smooth Grain Leather blocked with a design based on an illustration by Rockwell Kent. This is one of the most desirable Limited Edition (LE) books published by the Folio Society. Both the books and the clamshell (aka solander) case are in as-new condition.
