All 4 apparently male “animated deceased” figures are, how do we say, “excited” in an adult kind of way—insert bone-related jokes here—with the 2 outer skeletons swinging the rope while playing music using antaras / panpipes framing the 2 centered figures holding hands and jumping, free arms raised in the air. The scene is unmistakably celebratory and undeniably fun and entertaining We found what is almost certainly the original Moche piece after which this item was reproduced in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (Accession Number B79.0380). There it is described as being of Moche origin circa 100–300 CE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has its own calaberas stirrup vessel with the figures of a skeletal couple with their skeletal child. We reference it because we like the way the Met describes the genre generally and appreciate the additional information they offer. The item’s caption reads in part as follows: “Moche ceramic vessels were made in specialized workshops where every step of ceramic production was undertaken in situ, from the preparation of clays to the firing process. Vessels were made with two-piece molds, facilitating the production of multiples. After the molding process, potters carefully added handles, spouts, and small details, in this case the incised ribs and modeled arms. Skeletal individuals are often depicted in Moche ceramics, probably symbolizing the interplay and complementarity between life and death. It has been suggested that in Moche religion, a transitory stage between life and death is expressed by the existence of transitional beings such as simian individuals and the animated deceased. In painted or sculpted vessels, animated skeletons dance, embrace, play music with flutes and rattles, carry funerary offerings, or engage in sexual activities. This embracing skeletal couple with child perhaps illustrates death as a necessary stage for the renewal of life.” Given the way the Met describes such pieces we were surprised as to how few examples depicting the subject we could find online. They certainly are not ubiquitous which made our discovery of the source vessel in Israel all the more gratifying (we nearly gave up searching!). Until we had we were unable to confirm that there even was an original from which ours was reproduced. On that subject and the subject of its physical condition, the bottom of the vessel is marked REPRODUCCION in 2 places. We are unsure as to who manufactured this item or as to where exactly it was made though we suspect it would have originated in Peru. We are also unsure as to how old this item is but believe it to be vintage given the rest of the items found in the estate lot it was purchased from. The vessel measures roughly 9 1/8“ x 5“ x 4 1/2“ at its furthest points which is roughly the same scale of the original. The vessel weighs roughly 1 lb 0.8 oz. The vessel has aging, discoloration, scratches, dirty and/or stained areas, manufacturing imperfections, small paint-type splatter spots in multiple places, and a large paint drip and paint marks around and inside the spout (see pictures). The item appears to be free of any cracks or repairs. This awesome and unique vintage pre-Columbian Moche replica clay pottery stirrup vessel with 4 skeletons on each side is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
