Description: MOHANDAS K. GANDHI. Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian nationalist and spiritual leader who is considered the father of his country. Gandhi’s philosophy of passive resistance and non-violence set the stage for the British withdrawal from and independence of India. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT LETTER SIGNED BY MOHANDAS K. GANDHI ON HIS UPCOMING SALT MARCH LESS THAN TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE FAMOUS NON-VIOLENT MARCHES Historically important letter signed by Mohandas K. Gandhi on his upcoming Salt March less than two weeks before the famous non-violent marches: “Satyagraha Ashram, Sabarmati, 28-2-30, Dear Friend, I have your letter. By the time this reaches you most of the questions that you have asked will have been answered. In any event rather than anticipate my actions which I do not always know beforehand, I would rather allow action itself to speak. Yours sincerely, M.K. Gandhi.” Contains impeccable content on the manner in which he presents his leadership. “RATHER THAN ANTICIPATE MY ACTIONS WHICH I DO NOT ALWAYS KNOW BEFOREHAND, I WOULD RATHER ALLOW ACTION ITSELF TO SPEAK.” On March 12, 1930, a civil disobedience campaign against the British in India began, with Gandhi leading a 24-day 241-mile march to the Gujarat coast of the Arabian Sea as part of his historic “Salt March.” The march was in protest of the British Salt Tax which essentially made it illegal to sell or produce salt, allowing a British monopoly and making it illegal for workers to freely collect their own salt from the coasts of India. Upon his arrival, Gandhi picked up a lump of salt, breaking the law and was later imprisoned without trial from May 1930 to January 1931 for his act of civil disobedience.
