The text below is for information only and is from the opposite separate page it cannot be supplied with the print - All spelling subject to the OCR program used Morris Dancing at Bucklesham Ceremonial dancing has been known since man lived in tribes; the horse on the Iceni coins of the 2nd century BC in Suffolk can be linked with the hobby horse of the 14th century and so to East Suffolk's magical hobby 'Billy'. The six man Morris seen today is linked, via the Cotswold May Games of the 18th century, to the set dances of the Elizabethan Court. There is an early English reference to 'Maurice Daunce' in 1494 and there exists a Flemish engraving of six Morris Men, a Fool and a Maid Marion dated c. 1460. The 20th-Century revival of the Morris came to Suffolk at the Bury Pageant in 1907 and a men's Morris side has existed in the area since 1935. The yellow ship on the back of the costume of the East Suffolk Morris Men is reputed to relate to the ship that brought St Felix to Suffolk. The bells, white handkerchiefs and bright colours keep away the devils and allow the magic of the dance to pass to the onlookers. Morris dancing is a very democratic pastime,-the East Suffolk group for instance having included in its time a gardener, doctor, lorry driver, architect, crane driver, farmer, solicitor, carpenter, farm worker, chemist and teacher. Children will be delighted to know that the Fool is often played by Headmasters; I am tempted to continue but I shall not. This particular performance is taking place beside the Shannon Inn two days before the Royal wedding in July 1981 and the flags ready for the great event add to the gaiety of the scene.
