Mt. Washington CROWN MILANO Art Glass Cracker Jar / Biscuit Barrel

Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a lovely Mt. Washington CROWN MILANO Art Glass cracker jar or biscuit barrel in the "Wild Rose" pattern. The body of the cracker jar is made of opaque opal glass for which Mt. Washington is known for. The glass has a satin or matte finish with soft shading in the background and hand painted yellow flowers with jeweled stamens and inky-green foliage on wispy stems with the design continuing onto the back side. The metal collar, twisted swing-handle and lid were originally silver plated and today has a dark patina from age and from not being consistently polished. Measures 5 1/4" high (to top of collar) and 9 3/4" high (to the top of the handle), a 4 1/2" diameter top and overall width of 5 1/2". Weighs 1.14 pounds. This nice cracker jar is in excellent Estate condition reflecting only minor signs of normal wear. There is a faint nick on the bottom edge that is hard to notice and some minor roughness on the bottom of the base that is possibly a factory flaw. The metal collar, bail and lid are in very good condition with the exception of the dark patina. We have not tried to polish this so we are unsure if it can be polished to a good shine. We are selling this nice cracker jar "as found" condition. Crown Milano glass was originally called "Albertine" with the patent for this Art Glass being issued in 1893. The name was later changed in the Mt. Washington factory records to "Crown Milano". The early examples of this glass had a paper label with some of the later pieces marked with the "C M" Crown trademark. Crown Milano glass is scarce and generally only found in prominent Art Glass collections. This cracker jar is a beautiful example of this RARE and collectible Art Glass. The Wild Rose pattern is pictured on pages 103 and 116 in the "Mt. Washington Art Glass Identification & Value Guide" book by Betty B. Sisk.
