MUSEUM QUALITY ANTIQUE FOLDING SCREEN 1600 1700 Kano Edo Foo Lion Byobu Japanese

Description: MAGNIFICENT JAPANESE SHISHI LION FOLDING SCREENEdo Period Masterpiece, Kano Chikanobu (1660-1728) Rare and Important, Museum Quality Exquisite Japanese four panel folding screen, representing the epitome of Shogun era aesthetic. Exceptionally well depicted wild images of two fierce, yet playful shishi frolicking amongst a blossoming peony garden. Rendered with superb artistry, masterful brushwork exhibiting a sublime balance of bold lines and subtle washes. Kano Chikanobu (1660-1728) was one of the Edo Period's most famous painters. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he was the leading Kano painter in eighteenth century Edo. Born in the Musashi Province of Japan, he was the eldest son of Kano Tsunenobu (1636-1713). His mother was a daughter of Kano Yasunobu. In 1678, Chikanobu entered the service of the shogunate and worked with his father at Edo Castle. In 1713, he succeeded his father as third-generation head of the Kobikicho branch of the Kano school. By 1719, he received the honorary Buddhist title of Hogan. His works are held by some of the world's most prestigious museums, including New York's Metropolitan Museum and The British Museum in London. This outstanding folding screen superbly represents the epitome of the Japanese aesthetic during the age of the Shogun and samurai. A true masterwork exhibiting swirling brushstrokes boldly painted with elegance and balance. It is one of the finest examples of Kano artistry that we have ever seen, including in books and museums. The screen displays in tasteful and bold fashion commanding attention from all the way across the room. Examples of Kano Chikanobu's works are exceedingly rare. Most are single handscrolls and are held in the world's preeminent museum collections. This important large screen is of most handsome display size, measuring approximately 96 inches long and 73 inches tall when displayed flat (hung on a wall). Displayed standing and partially folded, length is determined by the degree to which the screen is opened, making it a highly versatile work of art. When folded closed for storage or shipment, the screen measures approximately 24.5 inches wide by 73 inches high by 3 inches thick. The screen is in excellent antique condition, having been recently remounted with silk borders and lacquered wood frames, with the original painting panels exhibiting just minor occasional scattered wear commensurate with age, as is commonly found on Edo period Byobu. Examples of Japanese art such as this rarely come on the open market. An extraordinary opportunity to own an important Asian treasure.
