Description: I have asked myself the familiar question: 'If a reader were limited to one book about Israel's story since May 1948, what would I like him to know?' Not only to know, but to feel. The past decades have their taste and atmosphere, as well as their recorded facts. The facts will survive in records and documents, but no encyclopaedia can convey the sharp fluctuations of mood between anguish and relief. It is here that our contemporary witness is needed, and we should give it while we can. In 1973 the overwhelming majority of Israeli citizens cannot have a living memory of the day on which their independence was proclaimed; the perils that attended its early weeks; the combined burden and glory of the mass-immigration in the first crowded years; the pressures and scarcities of the early 1950's; or the tormenting rhythm of frontier violence before 1956. Thereafter, we come into a period that lives more vividly in the reader's con-sciousness. I have therefore given special weight and space to the earlier period. I have undertaken no obligation to record everything of significance; selectivity is inherent in the task itself. I have considered that the main currents flowing into the formation of Israeli society and culture are no less decisive than the military and diplomatic battles which inevitably dominate most narrative literature on this subject. My thanks go out particularly to Elaine Varady for her research and choice of illustrations, and Alex Berlyne has dealt tastefully with the graphic design. Finally, I express appreciation to Edna Marks, Nitsa Pines and Siegfried Brandler, who have tirelessly typed my manuscript through so many drafts and versions. Jerusalem July 1972 Abba Eban
