Description: This is a 10 by 8 inch portrait oil painting by New Jersey Patrick Leavy of a woman behind whom there is a man holding a chicken and what appears to be a chicken coop. It may have been a scene from the artist's trip to Cuba in 1951. It is signed, titled and dated 1952, verso. Leavy traveled to Cuba in the spring of 1951 just months after the Cuban revolution when the complete turnover of the government policies had not yet taken place. It is a wonderful period piece that captures a piece of the Cuban culture. It is in excellent condition. It is signed verso. It comes in an old 15 by 12 1/2 inch slightly worn frame. See the condition report and the photos. It will be shipped for $30 via UPS. See the photos and biography below. Patrick A. Leavy was born in 1929 in Cranford, New Jersey. He attended the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art and the New School for Social Research. He worked for 47 years as a designer for Tiffany on projects that, among others, involved working with Paloma Picasso and John Lennon. However, despite his successful career with Tiffany, first and foremost, Leavy considered himself an artist, spending most of his adult life drawing and painting.Leavy’s inspiration was primarily self-induced with images and depictions coming from within, some of it almost atavistically, from Celtic and classical well-springs. He had an artistic kinship and personal friendship with the surrealist artists Gar Sparks and Amalia Ludwig, both of whom lived in close-by East Orange,N.J.Stylistically his work is closest to Surrealism. With his subjects and technique he created a distinctive and coherent body of work.Throughout his life he remained reclusive and seldom showed his work but it is known that he exhibited at Drew University, the Montclair Museum and the Newark Museum. He died in Parsippany, N.J. in 2014.
