NATHANIEL PEABODY - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 02/07/1797 - HFSID 251261 NATHANIEL PEABODY Manuscript Document signed by both, itemizing credit extended to Peabody by Jabez Parsons, amounting to a total indebtedness of $5,424.20 in 1797 Manuscript Document signed: "Nath. S. Peabody", "Jabez Parsons". No place, 1797 February 7. Two pages, 13½x16½, front and verso. The sums of indebtedness incurred and credit extended balance at $5,424.20. Massachusetts-born physician NATHANIEL PEABODY (1741-1823) was a member of the Continental Congress during the American Revolutionary War (1779-1780) and served in the New Hampshire Militia during the Revolutionary War. The first soldier in New Hampshire to resign from the British Army to join the Continental Army, he was chairman of the New Hampshire Committee of Safety and held the rank of Adjutant General in the state militia until 1779, when he commanded a brigade in Rhode Island. He was also a member of the New Hampshire state house of representatives (1776-1779, 1781-1785, 1787-1790, 1793-1796) and a representative from Rockingham County to the state senate (1785-1786, 1790-1793), as well as a delegate to the New Hampshire state constitutional convention (1782-1783). After the war, Peabody held the rank of major general in the militia (1793-1798). However, his friends mismanaged his funds while he worked for the government and military, and Peabody became bankrupt and had his affairs confined to the area around the debtors prison in Exeter, New Hampshire for 20 years. JABEZ PARSONS (b. 1730), also a Revolutionary War veteran, originally from Enfield, Connecticut, was a New England merchant about whom little is known without further research. Vertical center and 5 horizontal fold creases. Ware holes at center crease. Edges chipped, worn and soiled at folds. Stained and soiled. Lightly creased.
