The first edition of two maritime adventure novels by Frederick Marryat (1792-1848), derived from his experiences serving in the British Royal Navy. The Pirate is the story of two brothers separated at birth, one joins the navy; the other is thought lost and adopted by a pirate, but not a pirate himself. They are reunited when the navy brother hunts down the pirate. The Three Cutters is the story of a smuggler, a pleasure yacht, and a revenue schooner and what happens when they all cross paths. Marryat is an author whose work helped create the naval adventure literature. In real life, Marryat led four barges from the Newcastle on a raid against Orleans, Massachusetts on 19 December 1814, the last combat in New England during the war. The affair had mixed results. Initially, Marryat cut out an American schooner and three sloops, but he managed to escape with just one sloop. It is unusual to find this book in such fine condition.
